Mixed Tocopherol
Tertiary Butyl Hydroquinone- TBHQ

Tertiary Butyl Hydroquinone is a synthetic food grade anti-oxidant, used to stabilize foods, fats and vegetable oils against oxidative deterioration and thus extending their storage life. Tocopherol, a natural antioxidant present in vegetable oils is often inadequate for oxidative stability. Even external addition of Tocopherol provides little or no increase in the stability and hence needs synthetic antioxidant. TBHQ inhibits an outstanding stabilizing effect in unsaturated fats particularly in Poly-unsaturated vegetable oils and inedible animal fats. TBHQ -can also be advantageous in essential oils, nuts, buffer fat and food packaging material. Thus, TBHQ provides a healthier and most favoured option for preserving food products.

How to use TBHQ (Tertiary Butyl Hydroquinone)

Food preservative

TBHQ is used as a preservative for unsaturated vegetable oils and many edible animal fats.Usage rate: 0.01-0.1%.

It does not cause discoloration even in the presence of iron, and does not change flavor or odor of the material to which it is added. It can be combined with other preservatives such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA).It is added to a wide range of foods. Its primary advantage is extending storage life.

Other

In perfumery, it is used as a fixative to lower the evaporation rate and improve stability.

It is used industrially as a stabilizer to inhibit autopolymerization of organic peroxides.

It is used as an antioxidant in biodiesel.

It is also added to varnishes, lacquers, resins, and oil-field additives.

Application methods

Direct Method
A fat or oil can be stabilized by heating to a minimum of 60~70°c and agitating sufficiently for 10~15 minutes to dissolve the antioxidant. The agitation (not so vigorousthat excessive air is entrapped) should be continued for an additional 20 minutes to ensure uniform distribution.

Concentrate method
Concentrated solutions of antioxidant can be prepared by dissolving TBHQ in a small quantity of fat or oil (or 95%ethanol) to make a 5~10% TBHQ solution.Directly introduce this pre-made solution intothe oil and fat. Agitation is necessary for uniform distribution.

Pump-mixing method
The concentrated TBHQ solution made from concentrate method is fed into the inlet to the circulating pump. A stainless-steel proportioning pump is used to meter the TBHQ concentration into the oil at a desired rate.Turbulence should besufficient to thoroughly mix TBHQ in the oil before the mixture reaches the storage tank.

Spray method
Food products such as nuts, preserved meet products, fish productscan be sprayed directly with a dilute TBHQ solution. The concentration of TBHQ solution should be adjusted as required depending on the type of food product. Generally,0.02% TBHQ ethanol solution is suggested and make sure antioxidant is spread uniformly.

Mixing method
Blend and mix directly with solid ingredients.

1.Anti-oxidation ability: Excellent oil antioxidant, 3-5times stronger than other antioxidants such as BHA,BHT, PG, etc.

2. Safety: Its acute toxicity is low , which is safer;

3.Synergistic effect: It has synergistic effect whenused together with other antioxidants (such as BHA,BHT, etc,) and chelating agents (citric acid, etc.);

4. Oil solubility: Easily soluble in animal and vegetableoils, easy to add and use;

5.High temperature resistance: It can be applied tohigh temperature processed food, such as fried foodand baked food;

6. No coloring: No change in color and flavor due toencountering iron ions or copper ions during use;

7.Antibacterial effect: It can effectively inhibit thegrowth of bacteria and mold;

Application :

TBHQ has good solubility in fats and oils, with a maximum usage level of 0.02% based on theweight of the fat or oil or the fat content of the food product.

  • Heat the oil to about 60-70°c, add TBHQ according to the required proportion, stir vigorously for10-15 minutes to dissolve it, and then keep stirring (do not stir vigorously to avoid excessive airentry) for about 20 minutes to ensure that TBHQ is evenly distributed.
  • Dissolve TBHQ completely in a small amount of fat (or 95% alcohol solution), then add it directlyor with a meter into the fat or oil and stir to make TBHQ evenly distributed.

Precautions

1. Make TBHQ fully dissolved and evenly distributed in the oil, otherwise it will affect the antioxidant effect;

2. TBHQ cannot be used together with PG (propyl gallate);

3. Avoid using it under alkaline conditions.
