Applications of BHT

Butylated Hydroxytoluene, also known as BHT, is a chemical compound that is widely used as an antioxidant in various industries. Its primary function is to prevent the oxidation and degradation of products that contain fats and oils, which can ultimately lead to spoilage and loss of product quality. BHT is a white or slightly yellowish powder that is insoluble in water but soluble in fats and oils. It is widely used in the food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical industries, among others.

BHT can also be used in lubricating oil, secondary processing and petrol, paraffin, mineral oils, polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, ABS resin, polyester resin, cellulose, plastic foam as an antioxidant stabilizer.

BHT is a non-polluting anti-oxidant stabilizer for natural rubber, butadiene rubber, styrene butadiene rubber, neoprene, nitrile rubber, butyl rubber, isoprene rubber, ethylene propylene rubber, transformer oil, all kinds of latex products, especially white or light color ones.

Why does feed storage need BHT antioxidant ?

Feed storage needs BHT antioxidant to prevent the oxidation of feed, which can lead to rancidity and spoilage. BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) is a synthetic antioxidant commonly used in animal feed and pet food to prevent the breakdown of fatty acids and maintain the nutritional quality of the feed. Without an antioxidant like BHT, feed can become rancid and develop an unpleasant taste and odor, which can affect animal palatability and consumption. Additionally, the oxidation of feed can lead to the formation of harmful compounds such as free radicals and peroxides, which can have negative health effects on animals. Therefore, BHT is added to feed as a preventive measure to ensure the safety, quality, and palatability of animal feed.

Storage

Stored in the special interior storehouse which is dry and dark, and must lay the mat to protect from wet (Details on the back of the bag).

When transporting and loading, must avoid rain and sunshine beat; ensure the dry and the package bags will not be damaged and polluted by other products. The product can't be mixed with poisonous and injurious products while stored.

Package: 25kg/drums ,16Mt/FCL  with pallet

BHT packed with food plastic film bag lined with polyethylene inner, multi-layer cowhide-paper plasticcomposite bag and plastic film bag (to keep dry and to keep from moisture) outer.

The shelf life of BHT is 12 months

Synthesis route:

The chemical synthesis of BHT in industry has involved the reaction of p-cresol (4-methylphenol) with isobutylene (2-methylpropene), catalyzed by sulfuric acid:

CH3(C6H4)OH + 2 CH2=C(CH3)2 → ((CH3)3C)2CH3C6H2OH

BHT used in Food:

BHT is primarily used as an antioxidant food additive. In the United States, it is classified as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) based on a National Cancer Institute study from 1979 in rats and mice. It is approved for use in the U.S. by the Food and Drug Administration: For example, 21 CFR § 137.350(a)(4) allows BHT up to 0.0033% by weight in "enriched rice", while 9 CFR § 381.147](f)(1) allows up to 0.01% in poultry "by fat content".It is permitted in the European Union under E321.

BHT used in Cosmetics:

The European Union restricts the use of BHT in mouthwash to .001% concentration, in toothpaste to .01% concentration, and to .8% in other cosmetics.
